Upper Mustang by Motorcycle: The Road to Lo Manthang, Day by Day

There are rides, and then there are rides that take you somewhere the map barely prepares you for. Upper Mustang is the second kind — a remote rain-shadow region of Nepal, and the former kingdom whose walled city, Lo Manthang, sits at the end of one of the most dramatic motorcycle routes in the Himalaya.

Our Unforgettable Mustang expedition covers it in 8 nights and 9 days, with approximately 890 km of riding. Here's how the journey unfolds.

Days 1–2: Kathmandu to the lakeside

The expedition begins with arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a transfer to the hotel and time to rest or explore Thamel. On Day 2 the engines start: roughly 200 km along the Prithvi Highway, following rivers, villages and Himalayan foothills to Pokhara and its peaceful lakeside — Phewa Lake, Tal Barahi Temple, Gupteshwor Cave and Davis Fall.

Day 3: Up the Kali Gandaki to Muktinath

About 150 km that change everything. The route climbs through Beni and Tatopani into the Kali Gandaki Valley corridor, past Rupse Waterfall, Jomsom Bazaar and Kagbeni Village, before reaching the sacred Muktinath Temple.

This is the day the landscape starts to turn — greener foothills giving way to the high Himalaya.

Days 4–5: Into the ancient kingdom

From Muktinath the ride enters Upper Mustang proper: barren valleys, towering cliffs and ancient caves, through Chele, Samar and Syangboche to Ghami, with its chortens, mani walls and monastery.

Day 5 is short on distance — around 20 km — but long on scenery: the Dhakmar red cliffs, Ghami Gumba and high-altitude desert, before the walls of Lo Manthang and its Royal Palace come into view.

Day 6: Monasteries, then the long way down

A morning in Lo Manthang's narrow lanes, traditional houses and ancient monasteries — Jampa and Thubchen among them — reflecting centuries of Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Then the return begins: about 135 km through rugged landscapes, the Chosar caves, apple orchards and traditional villages to Marpha.

Days 7–9: Back through the gorge

The descent through the Kali Gandaki Gorge is its own reward — the terrain shifting from high-altitude desert to green valleys and forests, with suspension bridges, waterfalls and Tatopani's hot springs along the way. A final ride returns the group to Kathmandu for a farewell dinner with a cultural performance, and Day 9 closes the loop at the airport.
