A First-Timer's Guide to Riding in Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley is often described as a moonscape, and once you're there, it's easy to see why. But the terrain that makes it beautiful is also what makes preparation essential.

Altitude is the first thing to plan around — Kaza itself sits above 3,600 m, and Kunzum Pass tops 4,590 m. Give yourself a day to acclimatise before pushing higher, and drink far more water than feels necessary.

Road conditions vary hugely by season. In summer (June–September), most of the loop is open and manageable for riders with some mountain experience. Winter access is far more limited and technical — that's a different trip entirely.

Pack layered clothing rather than one heavy jacket: temperatures swing from warm midday sun to near-freezing nights, sometimes within the same day. And always carry cash — ATMs are sparse once you're past Kaza.
