Packing for High-Altitude Bike Expeditions: A Complete Checklist
Riders new to high-altitude expeditions tend to either overpack or underprepare — rarely the right balance. A few principles that hold across most of our routes:
Layering beats bulk. A good thermal base layer, a mid-layer fleece, and a proper riding jacket will outperform one heavy coat in changing mountain weather.
Protect your extremities. Cold hands and feet end trips early. Proper riding gloves rated for low temperatures and good boots matter more than most riders expect.
Documents matter as much as gear. Several of our routes require Inner Line Permits — carry originals and photocopies of your ID at all times, and passport-size photos where noted.
Medication and altitude. If you have any pre-existing conditions, carry your regular medication and inform your route captain in advance. Diamox is commonly used for altitude acclimatisation — consult your doctor before travel.
