Ladakh
Zanskar — a remote trans-Himalayan valley of monasteries, gorges, and glacial rivers.
Best time: July to September
Altitude: Up to 4,400 m (Pensi La)
Zanskar is one of the last truly remote corners of Ladakh — a valley enclosed by two parallel ranges of the Himalayas, connected to the outside world by a handful of high passes that stay open only a few months a year. The ride in is as much a part of the experience as the destination: switchbacks along the Zanskar and Suru rivers, ancient gompas perched on cliffs, and villages that have changed little in generations.
